It’s hard to describe just how exciting the arrival of the Meraki Espresso Machine is for aspiring home baristas and lovers of espresso-based drinks. That excitement was probably best illustrated by the first demo machine’s arrival at CCBHQ. Let’s just say that a crowd gathered quickly, a crowd of team members that have basically seen every domestic and commercial machine out there and work on some of the best every day. Nonetheless, they were very excited about the Meraki.
Before delving into all the features and specifications, let’s spell out what’s very special about this machine: it offers unprecedented amounts of integration and automation, without sacrificing on quality. This is a home espresso machine that not only uses commercial parts and can make cafe-quality beverages, it can also help you fine-tune them and even teach you how to make them.
At its centre, the Meraki Espresso Machine has a touch display that allows you to precisely control all your variables, but is also giving you real-time feedback and can even adjust your variables for you in its automatic modes. This intelligence interfaces with an impressive array of hardware, all built into the one machine. Beyond the expected espresso grouphead (which is of the 58mm standard), it has a built-in grinder, that is also integrated with a built-in scale that allows it, not only to set the grind setting, but also to control the dose automatically. The brewing group itself also works with a built-in scale to control your yield. Even the milk wand has a built in temperature sensor, allowing you to precisely control the final temperature of your milk, as well as the pressure at which you froth it.
As if all that wasn’t enough, the Meraki also has a rotary pump, like a high-end commercial machine, for quieter operation and better. It also comes with a bottomless portafilter, attachable spouts, a tamper, dosing cup, milk frothing jug, and a distributor, all as part of the package. It even has a built-in NFC reader which promises to be able to read recipes from roasters (once local businesses start embedding them in their bags, as is already happening in the USA).
Given all the hardware under the hood and all the technology that controls it, not to mention the accessories, you’d expect the Meraki to cost a pretty penny, but its price point is even more surprising. You get it for a comparable cost to other prosumer machines but without the need to purchase a separate grinder, scales or puck prep accessories. This makes it a bargain as well as a game-changer. Needless to say, we’re pretty excited about this new machine and we think it’s going to make a big impact on home espresso, and now, you can have one of these revolutionary machines too.
